ACHIEVING PRESCHOOL EXCELLENCE (A.P.EX.)

A.P.EX. is a state-funded, early childhood development program for four-year old children in Farmington, Pontiac, and Waterford, Michigan. 

A.P.EX:

  • uses the High/Scope curriculum, a nationally recognized model of early learning
  • operates concurrently with the school year (October to May)
  • preschool runs four days a week (Monday - Thursday)
  • child care available at all A.P.EX. locations
  • parent participation opportunities
  • family support services
  • resource and referral network

SPECIAL SERVICES AVAILABLE TO A.P.EX. FAMILIES

FOR CHILDREN:  Quality preschool classes, field trips, special events, kindergarten readiness, development assessments

FOR PARENTS:
  Group meetings, parent educational opportunities, parent involvement activities, parent/child groups, father groups

FOR FAMILIES:
  Family activities, resources and referrals, parent/teacher conferences, home visits, counseling services, support groups 

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR A.P.EX.?

THE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA ARE:
Child must be 4 years old by December 1 and meet at least two of any of the following:

Family Status:
  • low income
  • unemployed parent
  • teen parent
  • single parent
  • divorced parent

Health Concerns:

  • low birth weight
  • chronically ill family member
  • nutrition problems

Education Concerns:
  • high school dropout in family
  • diagnosed handicap
  • language delay or immaturity
  • developmentally immature
  • non-English speaking
  • parent/sibling educational difficulties
Famiy Issues:
  • history of delinquency
  • history of abuse or neglect
  • substance abuse or addiction
  • family density
  • rural or segregated housing
  • lack of stable support system
  • destructive or violent temperament
