LEKOTEK

The Lekotek® program uses interactive play experiences, and the learning that results, to promote the inclusion of children with special needs into family and community life. The mission of Lekotek® is to make the world of play accessible to children with all types of disabilities through special play and learning centers where they can have fun with traditional toys, adapted toys, books and computers.

Lekotek® is a national program which includes a toy lending library designed especially for children with special needs including delays or disabilities, parent education, disability information, referrals to additional services, help in navigating services, help in advocating for their child, the use of the Lekotek® parent resource library, and connections to other parents.

At the same time that family bonds are strengthened through interactive play, the special needs child learns developmental skills that typically help children learn to read, understand mathematic reasoning and use computers.  The Lekotek® program also includes play groups where parents and children play together with other families. Oakland Family Services is an affiliate of the National Lekotek® Center and has staff that are trained Lekotek® Program Facilitators.  The Oakland Family Services Pontiac office houses a Lekotek® Toy Lending Library.

The Lekotek program is available free to participants in Dynamic Dads. There is a $15 monthly fee to use the toy lending library and $5 per week fee for the playgroups for other participants.
